trendio.com - Prediction market and Prediction game
April 20, 2008 – 5:49 am

Now this is one of those concepts that just boggles the mind a little bit. It’s like the Hollywood Stock Exchange gone ballistic. The Hollywood Stock Exchange, for those that are unfamiliar, is an online market place made to emulate wall street except instead of trading companies, you trade actors, movies, producers, etc. By having a winning portfolio, you get prizes.
Trendio.com takes the same concept and applies it to the news. People buy stock in words that may appear in the news and the stocks go up or down depending on how the words do. The average person gets to bet (fake money, but who’s counting) on how popular a news item will be. By getting a hot portfolio, you can win prizes. This is definitely worth watching for those interested in current events.
What’s the concept?
A prediction market for news events.
Why should you care?
It’s a great way to kill time and see what will make the news and how frequently.
Will this company last 5 years?
Their main source of monetization seems to be advertising through Google AdWords presently. I think that they definitely have some staying power and with a name like Trendio, they can easily branch off into other prediction markets, not just the news.
